Grades, GPA, & Class Rank

Grading Scales

Pre-K (K3 & K4) Grading Scale

The grading scale used by BBCS for Pre-K 3 and 4 students is skills based. Parents will receive a detailed developmental checklist indicating progress/mastery in academic, behavioral, and social milestones.

K5-12th Grade Grading Scale

The grading scale used by BBCS students is as follows, where GPA is calculated for high school students:

A+ 98-100 (4.0) B+ 89-91 (3.3) C+ 79-81 (2.3) D+ 69-71 (1.7) F 0-61 (0.0)
A 94-97 (4.0) B 84-88 (3.0) C 74-78 (2.0) D 64-68 (1.0)
A– 92-93 (3.7) B– 82-83 (2.7) C– 72-73 (1.7) D– 62-63 (0.7)

Report Cards and The School’s Database

Student grades and report cards can be monitored in the school’s database, FACTS. Parents can check their child’s progress in each class at any time by utilizing the online grade system through this database. This provides a continuous source of communication of academic progress between parents and teachers. Report cards are posted every quarter in FACTS, sent to parents via email, and hard copies are sent home.

Parents and students are assigned an individual username and password to access FACTS. Usernames and passwords are distributed to families at the start of the school year upon enrollment at BBCS. For questions regarding the school’s database account usernames and passwords, contact the school office. Parents are encouraged to review assignments daily and to check with the teacher if there are questions about the classroom schedule. It is the parent’s responsibility to carefully review what the student is accomplishing in the homework process.

Progress Reports

Progress reports will be emailed to parents halfway through each quarter to provide an update on the academic progress of each student. This is an opportunity for parents and teachers to connect and discuss any questions or concerns regarding specific grades. Parents are encouraged to reach out to teachers for further clarification or support as needed. These reports are sent early enough to allow time for students or teachers to make any necessary adjustments before final quarter grades are recorded.

Quarter/Semester Grades

Quarter grades are calculated based on various factors such as tests, quizzes, homework, and other assessments. Each teacher determines the grading categories that will form the basis of the class grading criteria and specifies the percentage weight of each category in the final grade.

Semester grades are calculated based on the two quarter grades, with each quarter weighted as 50% of the semester grade. All semester and final exams are factored into the quarterly grades for each class, as determined by the teacher.

GPA Calculations

Only grades for courses taken at BBCS in grades 9-12 are included in the GPA calculation. Pass/Fail classes and any courses taken at other institutions, including BBCS Middle School, are not included in the GPA. Grades earned in Honors courses are weighted more heavily in the calculation of class rank. If a student retakes a course due to a failing grade, both the failing grade and the grade earned in the repeated course will be included in the GPA calculation. A student’s GPA is calculated at the end of each semester using the following method:

  1. Each numeric grade is converted to a GPA point value (refer to the Grading Scale).
  2. The GPA point values are multiplied by the earned credits, summed, and divided by attempted credits.
  3. The student’s cumulative GPA includes all semester grades for courses taken at BBCS during 9th-12th grades.

Class Rank

Class rank is determined by a student’s GPA, but it is updated at specific times during the school year:

  1. End of Junior Year: A preliminary GPA and class rank are calculated and can be used for college applications, as many colleges request this information early.
  2. End of Senior Year: The final GPA and class rank are determined once all coursework has been completed and graded. This final class rank is used for graduation purposes.
  3. Additional Check (Upon Request): If needed by a college, an additional GPA and class rank check may be requested at the end of the first semester of the senior year. This interim ranking can be provided to colleges for application purposes before the final rank is determined.
